REDUCING ENERGY

We recommend a few simple measures could help you to heat your home more efficiently and cheaply:

Reduce the temperatures
Reduce the temperature in each room. An temperature of between 20° and 21°C is ideal for living / dining rooms. Bedrooms should be a few degrees cooler.

Don’t let money escape out the window!
Close windows and pull blinds at night. The temperature should never be reduced by opening a window to vent the room as this consumes too much energy. From an energy perspective, it's unwise to leave windows open all the time. It's much better to completely open several windows for five to ten minutes each day.

Conserve energy while on holidays
If you take a winter break or go away for a weekend, we recommend that you switch the heating to its economy setting. Holiday homes should be heated to a temperature of only 6°C when unoccupied.

This requires the heating system to be fitted with a thermostat to prevent the temperature from dropping below 6°C. Less energy is used to heat the air back up to 20°C again than keeping the room heated to 15°C for five days.

Avoid draughts
Draughts are not only uncomfortable, they also lead to a loss of warmth. Ensure that windows, doors and joints are well sealed and close the chimney covers when the fireplace is not in use. Bleed the heating system regularly and have it maintained periodically.

Insulate
Check your cavity walls and roof space are insulated.
