OIL TANKS

In order to protect you, your property and the environment, we recommend:

Oil Tank Base

  • Oil tanks are positioned on a flat, solid base, preferably made from concrete.
  • The oil tank base has a small tilt away from the outlet.

Installing and Locating an Oil Tank

  • If possible, install a double skin, bunded oil tank. This means if your tank develops a leak, the bund will prevent the oil from spilling.
  • If possible, locate plastic oil tanks in a sheltered location out of direct afternoon sunshine. Long periods of hot sunshine during the spring and summer can weaken plastic tanks.
  • Try to position your oil tank in a location away from your dwelling house so that in the unlikely event of a leak the oil will not flow under the foundations of your house.

Running Out of Oil and Refills

  • Do not let your tank run out of oil. This can damage your boiler. Sediment is also stirred up when a refill of oil is pumped into an empty tank.
  • If you run out of oil, do not tip your tank up to drain the contents. This will cause all the sludge and any moisture that has built up in your tank below the outlet to flow out and damage your boiler.
  • Avoid refilling you tank using small containers except in an emergency. If you are refilling your oil tank from small drums, make sure the containers are completely clean. Regular filling of your tank from small drums will increase sediment and could cause damage to your boiler.

General Tips

  • Diesel tanks should be completely cleaned every five years.
  • Check that the cap is well secured and cannot blow off in strong winds.
